Hiring an HVAC Contractor in Alberta
Heating systems involve gas, electricity and refrigerants. Checking a few things before work starts helps make sure the job is safe and properly permitted.
Request an HVAC technicianGas work
Work on gas furnaces, water heaters and gas lines must be done by a qualified gasfitter and usually needs a gas permit under Alberta's Safety Codes Act. Ask about both.
Refrigeration
Installing or repairing air conditioners and heat pumps involves refrigerant, which should only be handled by technicians trained and certified for it.
Permits and inspection
Ask who will pull the permit and when the inspection happens. Keep the permit and inspection record with your home papers.
Written quotes
Ask for a written quote listing the equipment, model numbers, any venting or duct work, the permit and removal of old equipment.
Sizing
A good contractor sizes a furnace or heat pump from a load calculation, not just the old unit's label.
Ready to go
Send a request with your details. See our services.
Red flags
Be wary of anyone who wants full payment up front, won't give a business name you can check, or suggests skipping the permit. Ask about warranty terms on equipment and labour, and who to contact if something goes wrong after installation.
Questions worth asking
How long will the house be without heat during the swap? Will the old equipment be removed? Is the thermostat included? What maintenance does the new system need, and does the warranty require it? Clear answers to these are a good sign.
After the job
Keep the invoice, permit, model numbers and warranty papers together. Register the equipment with the manufacturer if the warranty requires it, and note the date so you remember when the first tune-up is due.
