HVAC in Taber

Taber at a glance

Taber is a town about 51 km east of Lethbridge, where Highway 3 meets Highway 36. It's famous for its corn thanks to all the sunshine the area gets, and calls itself the Corn Capital of Canada.

What that means for your cooling

Plenty of sunshine means hot summer afternoons, and west-facing rooms can get uncomfortable even with central air. Shading, a well-sized AC and balanced ducts all help. See air conditioning.

Cornfest and summer heat

Taber's Cornfest is held in the last week of August, often in the heat of late summer. Book an AC tune-up in spring so the system is ready before the hottest weeks. Sunny, open country means long hours of summer sun on roofs and west walls. Attic insulation, good ventilation and shading on the sunny side all ease the load on air conditioning through August.

From Tank No. 77

Taber was first known as "Tank No. 77", a railway water stop. A post office was built in 1907 and the CPR settled on the name Taber. The town grew on coal mining, which declined in the late 1920s and picked up again in the 1930s, and on irrigation, which brought sugar beets; a sugar beet processing plant was built in 1950. Homes from these different eras use different heating. Older homes may have aging furnaces and undersized ducts; newer ones often have high-efficiency systems with side-wall vents that must be kept clear of snow.
