Furnace Repair in Lethbridge, AB

A furnace that quits on a cold, windy night is more than uncomfortable. A few checks can sometimes get it going, and the rest is a job for a qualified technician.

Check the simple things

Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and a few degrees above room temperature, and that its batteries aren't dead. Check that the furnace switch, often a light switch on or near the unit, is on, and that the breaker hasn't tripped.

The filter

A clogged filter chokes airflow, and many furnaces shut down to protect themselves when it gets too warm inside. Wind-blown dust fills filters faster here, so check yours monthly in winter.

Blowing cold air

If the fan runs but the air is cold, the burners may not be lighting. Causes include a dirty flame sensor, a failed igniter or a blocked condensate drain on a high-efficiency furnace. These need a technician.

Short cycling

A furnace that starts and stops every few minutes wears out faster and heats unevenly. A dirty filter, an oversized furnace or a faulty sensor are common causes.

Vents and snow

High-efficiency furnaces vent through plastic pipes out the side of the house. Drifting snow or ice can block them and shut the furnace down. Keep the vent and intake clear.

When to get help

If you smell gas, leave the house and contact the gas utility from outside. Otherwise, tell the technician what the furnace is doing and any error lights you see. Send a request and an HVAC technician will get in touch.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my furnace blow cold air at the start?
Many furnaces run the fan briefly before the air warms up. If it stays cold for several minutes, the burners may not be lighting.
How often should I change the filter?
Check it monthly during heating season and replace it when it looks grey or dusty. Homes with pets or lots of wind-blown dust may need more frequent changes.
