Furnace Not Heating? A Lethbridge Checklist
Before booking a repair, a few quick checks can sometimes get a furnace running again, or at least tell the technician where to start.
Request an HVAC technicianThermostat
Make sure it's set to heat and a few degrees above room temperature. Replace the batteries if it has them, and check the schedule hasn't switched it to a lower setting.
Power switch and breaker
The furnace has a service switch that looks like a light switch, on or near the unit. Make sure it's on, and check the breaker panel.
Filter
A clogged filter can shut a furnace down. Slide it out and look; if it's grey and dusty, replace it. The arrow points toward the blower.
Vents outside
High-efficiency furnaces vent through plastic pipes on a side wall. Clear any snow, ice or debris blocking them.
Error lights
Many furnaces have a small window with a blinking light. Count the blinks and check the code on the panel door; tell the technician.
When to stop
If you smell gas, leave and contact the gas utility from outside. Otherwise, if these checks don't help, see furnace repair.
Keep warm while you wait
Close curtains, shut doors to unused rooms and use safe, approved space heaters kept clear of anything that burns. Never use a gas oven or barbecue to heat the house. If the house will be cold for a long time, protect pipes on outside walls by opening cabinet doors.
